Geocache Description:

A cache in the heart of uphill Roman Lincoln.

LINDVM was founded in A.D. 60 as a fortress that housed the ninth legion. The original fortress is beneath Lincoln Castle. In A.D. 77 the legions left and the site became a 'Colonia' which is a retirement home for veteran soldiers and their families.
The original gates to the Roman city were: Northgate-Newport Arch, Eastgate-near the Lincoln Hotel, Westgate close to the Lawn complex and Southgate-just south of the Wig and Mitre Pub. Lindum Colonia expanded down the hill in the 2nd. and 3rd. centuries. Many Roman remains can still be seen, some obvious and well documented, some hidden and seldom seen.
This cache will take you to extensive remains, not often visited. Other interesting sites are within easy walking distance. Happy hunting.
