Geocache Description:

This earth cache is at 1000 steps, near Mt. Union, PA. You are looking for a rock with "Worm fossils" in it. This earthcache is between the # 200 and # 300 steps into the climb on the right hand side of the steps.

This earth cache site will show you some interesting fossils at an interesting place.

A fossil is the preserved remains of an animal , plant, or other organism from the past. Fossils can range in size from a microscopic single cell organism to something huge like a dinosaur skeleton or a tree. A fossil typically preserves only part of the dead organism, usually bone and teeth of vertebrates, or the exoskeletons of invertebrates. Preservation of soft tissues is rare in the fossil record because the usually decay before they are fossilized. Fossils may also consist of the marks left behind by the organism while it was alive, such footprint These types of fossil are called trace fossils, as opposed to body fossils.

Fossilization is rare, because most living things tend to decompose relatively quickly after death. For an organism to be fossilized, the remains normally need to be covered by sediment as soon as possible. There are exceptions, such as if an organism becomes frozen.

The question is what kind of fossils are these?

This is where I learned something from this site! When most of us think of fossils we think of the body fossils (bone, teeth, exoskeleton, etc) but these are TRACE FOSSILS! These are trace fossils created when worms or worm type organisms tunneled their way through the ground and then they were later filled with sediment and over time it all fossilized. So these trace fossils are to worms what a fossilized foot print is to a dinosaur.
Please be careful during hunting season. Go to the website www.pgc.state.pa.us to see when the hunting seasons are. Game Commission regulations spell out specific fluorescent orange requirements for hunters, which are outlined on pages 78-79 of the 2005-06 Pennsylvania Digest of Hunting and Trapping Regulations. However, from Nov. 15-Dec. 15, except for Sundays, those using State Game Lands who are not engaged in hunting, trapping or fishing must wear a minimum of 250 square inches of fluorescent orange on head, chest or back combined, visible 360 degrees, or, in lieu thereof, a hat of the same color. Keep in mind that hunting regulations and dates change every year.
