O tapirech obecne
Tapírovití, celed lichokopytníku, zahrnuje 4 druhy býložravých zvírat (tapír cabrakový, tapír stredoamerický, tapír horský a tapír jihoamerický), žijících v tropických oblastech Asie a Jižní Ameriky. Tapíri jsou velcí asi jako osli, telo je uzpusobeno k rychlému pohybu hustým podrostem. Jihoamerictí tapíri jsou tmave hnedí nebo šedí, asijský druh, tapír cabrakový, je cerno-bílý. Spolecným znakem všech tapíru je horní pysk protažený v pohyblivý chobutek, tapíri ale nejsou príbuzní se slony. Mají krátké, nepríliš pohyblivé uši a krátký ocas. Na predních nohách mají 4 prsty. Nejvetší je 3. prst, obdoba prostredníku, 2. a 4. prst jsou slabší a 5. prst má kratší záprstní kost a tím je posunut výš. Tapír na nej našlapuje, jen pokud se pohybuje v mekké pude. Zadní nohy mají 3 prsty. prostrední 3. prst je nejvíce vyvinut. Na nohách mají pružný polštárek, jaký mají sloni a nosorožci. Všechny prsty jsou chráneny kopýtky. Chrup se podobá dentici kone, skládá se v každé polovine celisti ze trí rezáku, jednoho špicáku a trí stolicek. V horní celisti mají 4 trenáky a v dolní jen 3. Tapíri jsou velmi plachá, samotárská zvírata, která obývají hustý podrost tropických lesu. Mládata se rodí pruhovaná jako selata.
Tapir jihoamericky (Tapirus terrestris)
Tapír jihoamerický dorustá 1,8 - 2,5 m s hmotností okolo 270 kg a výškou v kohoutku mezi 77 - 108 cm. Je porostlý krátkou, štetinatou obvykle tmave hnedou srstí. Má mohutné telo s ponekud krátkými koncetinami, krátkým pohyblivým chobotem a nízkou, vzprímenou hrívou, která se táhne od temena až po úroven lopatek. Obe pohlaví jsou zbarvena stejne, mládata jsou hnedá se svetlým pruhováním a skvrnením. Obývá amazonský prales východne od And v rozmezí od Venezuely, Kolumbie a Guyanu na severu, po Brazílii, Argentinu na jihu a Bolívii, Peru a Ekvádor na západe.
Od roku 2002 je v Cerveném seznamu ohrožených druhu IUCN z duvodu lovu a ztráty prirozeného biotopu oznacen jako zranitelný (Vulnerable), i presto je stále nejhojnejší ze ctyr druhu tapíru. Tapír jihoamerický žije samotársky a velmi skryte. Vetšinou se zdržuje v blízkosti vodních ploch, kde se v prípade prímého ohrožení casto ukrývá. I pres svuj mohutný vzhled umí dobre plavat, potápet se a i na skalnatých terénech vyvinout pomerne vysokou rychlost. Mezi jeho hlavní predátory patrí krokodýli, jaguári a pumy, které na tapíry casto útocí i v noci. Je býložravý, požírá listy, pupeny, výhonky, plody a vodní rostliny. Samci jsou vysoce agresivní a se samicí se sdružují jen na pár dnu v období párení. Samice rodí obvykle jedno mláde vážící 4 - 7 kg. S matkou zustává nejméne rok.
Ve volné prírode se tapír jihoamerický dožívá približne 25 - 30 let. V Ceské republice tapíra jihoamerického chová krome ZOO Praha jeste ZOO Zlín, Jihlava, Brno a Ústí nad Labem.

Tapirs: general information
Tapirs, section of pericodactyles involves 4 species of herbivors (Baird's tapir, Malayan tapir, Mountain tapir and Brazilian tapir, which live in tropical areas of Asia and South America. Tapirs are a size of a donkey, their body is adapted for fast movement through the bushy undergrowth. Tapirs from South America are darkbrown or grey, the asian species is black and white. Common characteristic of all tapir species is a small proboscis, but tapirs are not relatives of elephants. They have small, less movable ears and short tail. Forefeet have 4 fingers, the 3rd is the biggest, 2nd and 4th smaller and 5th finger has risen because of a shorter bone. This finger is pressured only during the movement in tender soil. Backfeet have only 3 fingers. The balls on the fingers are similar to elephants' or rhinos' balls. All fingers are protected by small hoof. Tapirs' teeth are similar to horse - 3 incisors, 1 cuspid and 3 molars. They have 4 premolars in upper jaw and 3 in the lower. Tapirs are quite skittish and solitary animals, which like bushy undergrowth of tropical forest. The young ones breeded striped like piglets.
Brazilian tapir (Tapirus terrestris)
It is dark brown in color and has a low, erect mane running from the crown down the back of the neck. The Brazilian Tapir can attain a body length of 1.8 to 2.5 m (6 to 8 ft) with a 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 in) long tail and 270 kg (595 lbs) in weight. It stands somewhere between 77 to 108 cm (2.5 to 3.5 feet) at the shoulder. The Brazilian Tapir can be found near water in the Amazon Rainforest and River Basin in South America, east of the Andes. Its range stretches from Venezuela, Colombia, and Guianas in the north to Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, in the south, to Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador in the West. The species are excellent swimmers and divers but also moves quickly on land, even over rugged, mountainous terrain. In the wild, the main predators of the Brazilian Tapir are crocodilians and large cats such as the Jaguar and Cougar, which often attack the tapir at night when they leave the water and sleep on the riverbank. It is a herbivore. Using its mobile snout, this tapir feeds on leaves, buds, shoots, and small branches that it tears from trees, fruit, grasses, and aquatic plants.
Since 2002 in brazilian tapir and the Red Book of IUCN and beacuse of hunting and loss of biotop marked as Vulnerable. But it is still the most spread out from all 4 species of tapir. Males are very agressive and they join the female just a few days during the mating. Female gives birth to 1 young one (4-7 kg). It stays with its mother at least a year.
The species has a life span of approximately 25 to 30 years. In the Czech Republic is brazilian tapir breeded in ZOO in Prague, Zlin, Jihlava, Brno and Usti nad Labem.
