Geocache Description:

Five-ninety fun! After driving down “the longest cul-de-sac in England”, it’s time for a stretch of the legs at an attractive open space next to the fast tides of Walney Channel gurgling under Jubilee Bridge.

This cache has two parts: produce a GPS drawing of the ‘park’ and while you’re walking the paths, find a clue to calculate the real co-ordinates of the cache, which is hidden in the immediate area. Parking can be found in a circular car park on the south side of the park. At the roundabout head west onto the bridge for Walney, and 50m on the right is the car park.

As well as doing ‘normal’ things with a GPS, like geocaching, some folk use the breadcrumb track as art. See: GPS Drawing . Here’s a chance to have a go by drawing the paths in the park. You should end up with a ‘squashed’ balloon. See if you can do better than me! See photo below. Having thought about it and explored with pencil and paper, I think there’s no way of walking round all the paths without repeating (going over twice) a section of line. The total route is around 800m, so a little bit of exercise!

If you’ve mastered your GPS you can download your ‘track log’, to your computer, produce it as a graphic, and upload it to the cache page. If you can’t do this, try taking a macro picture of your GPS like I’ve done.  If you're using a smart phone, various apps can record and show a trail, eg MotionX GPS

The co-ordinates given above are a good place to start. While walking round to draw the balloon you will discover a poem. To locate the actual cache - a small vial - you need to find the name of your auntie then carry out a simple bit of maths.

If ‘find’ equals 6, 9, 14, 4, calculate the name of your auntie.

For the last three digits of the lattitude 54° 06. X1 X2 X3
X1 = 2nd digit, X2 = 2nd+3rd digits, X3 = 2nd digit

For the longitude: 03° 14. Y1 Y2 Y3
Y1 = 2nd digit, Y2 = 3rd digit, Y3 = (1st+2nd) - (3rd+4th)

Barrow has always been intimately connected to the sea with either fishing or heavy industry. The side of Walney Channel was a hive of ship building for over 100 years. Now it’s submarines, built mostly indoors in the big 'shed', and the water sees the local motor boats chugging down the channel for a fishing trip. The park is a peaceful spot by the water and the bridge. The whole park is wheelchair accessible but reaching the cache would be tricky.
Have fun! Re-hide well!
