EUR
L'EUR è uno dei
quartieri di Roma (più precisamente il 32) che nasce in
tempi relativamente moderni: deve infatti la sua realizzazione al
progetto di ospitare nel 1942 l'Esposizione Universale. Tale data
non fu scelta a caso, infatti avrebbe dovuto coincidere con le
celebrazioni del 20° anniversario della Marcia su Roma
(28/10/1922) e la presa del potere da parte di
Mussolini.
I progetti vengono preparati a partire dal 1936
sotto la direzione dell'architetto Piacentini che cerca di
coniugare modernità e architettura classica dell'Impero
Romano per creare imponenti effetti scenografici. L'idea di base
prevede anche l'utilizzo di ampi spazi verdi. I lavori iniziano
quasi subito ma verranno presto interrotti per il subentrare di
problemi legati allo scoppio della seconda guerra mondiale.
Nel dopoguerra i lavori vengono ripresi, ma solo
in occasione delle Olimpiadi del 1960 l'intero quartiere riceve un
nuovo impulso per il suo sviluppo con il completamento di alcune
opere previste inizialmente e la costruzione di nuove (il serbatoio
dell'acqua - Fungo, il palazzo dello sport e il velodromo).
Il nome originario del quartiere era E42
(Esposizione 1942 - ancora visibile il logo su alcuni tombini della
zona), poi variato nel dopoguerra in EUR dall'acronimo di
Esposizione Universale Romana; nella toponomastica del Comune di
Roma è denominato quartiere Europa.
Il Laghetto
Posto all'interno di un'ampio spazio verde in
una zona leggermente incassata, il bacino artificiale si estende
per circa 85.000 mq con una profondità massima di 3. Pensato
e progettato all'interno del più ampio piano
dell'Esposizione del 1942, la sua realizzazione fu più volte
posticipata fino a giungere a compimento nel 1960, in occasione
delle Olimpiadi di Roma.
Il laghetto fa parte di un ampio "Parco Centrale
dell'Eur", progettato dall'architetto Raffaele De Vico, che ospita
una una ricchissima varietà di flora e fauna, anche
acquatica. La preziosità del disegno di De Vico sta nel suo
valore scenografico - è il fondale che si offre a chi esce
dalla città percorrendo via Cristoforo Colombo - e
panoramico. Stretto è il rapporto con il Teatro Verde di De
Vico che lo fronteggia sulla sponda opposta e, sul retro, con il
Palalottomatica disegnato da Nervi.
Oggi nel laghetto dell'Eur si svolgono alcune
attività sportive, soprattutto canottaggio.

EUR is one of the districts
of Rome (more precisely number 32) who was established in
relatively modern times: in order to achieve the project to host
the 1942 Universal Exposition. This date was not chosen at random,
it was to coincide with the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of
the March on Rome (28/10/1922) and the taking of power by
Mussolini.
The projects are prepared starting from 1936
under the direction of Piacentini that tries to combine modern and
classical architecture of the Roman Empire to create impressive
effects. The basic idea also includes the use of large green
spaces. The works began almost immediately but will soon be stopped
for problems related to the outbreak of World War II.
In the post-war years works went on slowly and
only during the Olympic Games of 1960 the entire district received
a new impetus to its development with the construction of new
buildings (the water tank - Il Fungo, the Sports Palace and the
Velodrome). The original name of the district was E42 (Exhibition
1942 - the logo still visible on some manholes in the area), then
changed after the war in EUR from Esposizione Universale Romana but
the official name is Europa District.
Il Laghetto
Placed inside a large green space, the reservoir
covers about 85,000 square meters with a maximum depth of 3 meters.
Conceived and designed within the broader plan of 1942 Universal
Exposition, its implementation was delayed several times to reach
completion in 1960, before the Olympic Games in Rome.
The lake is part of a broad "Parco Centrale
dell'Eur", designed by Raffaele De Vico, which hosts a variety of a
rich flora and fauna, including water.
The importance of the De Vico draft lies in its
scenic and panoramic value - is the background that is offered to
those who leave the city along Via Cristoforo Colombo.
