A unique rock feature located in the Durant Nature Park. Accessible
by both the paved Greenway Trail or the Perimeter Trail. *****
Handicap Accessible if paved Greenway Trail is used *****
At the above coordinates you will find the aptly named Whale Rock.
This rock is a large chunk of what appears to be a granite type
rock. This is evident by the non-layered appearance and smooth
texture of the rock. Granite is a form of igneous rock, a rock that
was formed by the cooling of magma (a.k.a. lava). Obviously there
have not been any volcanoes in the North Carolina area for millions
of years. This large rock was more than likely deposited by a
glacier hundreds of thousands of years ago. Eventually the stream
at this location unearthed this rock and through the years eroded
the rock into it's now whale like shape. You will notice a crevice
in the rock formation, according to park officials as recent as 10
years ago, water flowed through this crevice in the middle of the
rock. Increased storm water from development has cut a new channel
around the rock. To receive credit for the find, answer the
