Geocache Description:

A small drive-by cache with a log and pencil and a few small trinkets. It can probably accommodate small trackables. The location is a layby at the side of a road and so cachers who have children with them need to be particularly careful of passing traffic.

The co-ordinates should bring you to one of the most important archaeological sites in Northumberland. The hill to the south is Yeavering Bell on top of which stands the largest hillfort in Northumberland. The plateau on the north side of the road has yielded evidence of Neolithic and Bronze Age settlements but, most importantly, it was the site of Ad Gefrin, an Anglo-Saxon royal palace of the Kings of Northumbria.
King Edwin was the first northern king to be converted to Christianity and the Venerable Bede records in his Ecclesiastical History of the English People that, in 627AD, Bishop Paulinus visited the area and spent thirty six days baptising many of Edwin’s subjects in the River Glen. By 685AD, Ad Gefrin had been abandoned for a new royal site at Maelmin, about three miles north, near Millfield.
Although the general location of Ad Gefrin was known from Bede’s description in his Ecclesiastical History, it wasn’t until 1951 that the archaeologist Brian Hope-Taylor examined an aerial photograph taken in 1949 by Dr J K S St Joseph and began an excavation that led to the royal palace’s identification.
