Geocache Description:

Seafield Pier

Fist and foremost, please be carefull when bringing children
to this cache. Beyond the sea walls there is a steep drop onto
rocks/the atlantic.

Seafield, according to the historian Frost, should be called "Barr
na gCros", the headland of the crosses. The name was derived from
the practice of temporarily burying the remains of the dead there
in stormy weather when they could not be carried to the cemetery in
Mutton Island. In the meantime, crosses were placed over the
coffins.

From here there is an excellent view of Mutton Island, which up to
the 20s was inhabited, the inhabitants made aliving from fishing
and the harvest of other seafoods.

A cave on the northen side of Mutton Island is called Poul Tabach
(tobacco cave), a reminder of the smugglers that hid their
contraband here.

In the north-east corner of the island are the graves of unknown
sailors, believed locally to have belonged to a ship from the
Spanish Armada fleet, "The Sao Marcos."
