Follow your GPSr heading into a designated Ontario Provincial Fish Sanctuary, and paddle into the increasingly shallow water to the designated island landfall. In the spring and summer months, this area is covered in water lilies and blooms, which make a very scenic approach to the cache site. Note the water levels for the final 100 feet are 1-2 feet, so this cache is not approachable by power boat.
Once you have made landfall, pull your watercraft up to the gentle sloping pine needle shore, and head inland for 40m stroll into the woods over the easy terrain. No bushwacking is required, as the pine stand has provided clear passage between the trees. Not a bad place to have a short break and a picnic if the sun is out!
Cache container is a 2kg peanut butter container, with the following contents:
- Mini beanbag
- Jumbo yellow dice
- Large IC chip
- Ottawa Cycle map (free)
- Rubber snake
- Stuffed doggie (in baggie)
- Star Wars dog tag
- “Faith” rubber wrist band
- Small magnifying glass
- Camo flat micro Geocaching container
- Pair Goodie Hair Elastics (in baggie)
- Mini toy Simba flashlight
And of course a logbook, pencil, and Geocaching manifesto.
I’ve also setup other water friendly caches in the area: Fish Sanctuary (GC1H7KM), Cliffs of Dover (GC1H7KJ), White Pine Point (GC1H7KK), and Rock Island (GCQ0PK) which is a great final destination for a picnic, and some fishing.
Water access for your watercraft (canoe, kayak) can be done at the Township of South Crosby Beach and Parking area, located off Delong Road (N 44 34.917 W 076 14.711). This site also has some public playground equipment handy for younger cachers, though I’ve seen very little swimming in the area. There is a 50m portage from the parking site to the lakeshore. This site also has land accessible to the cache Three Tall Trees (GCWE0W), which is 150m from the parking lot.
Enjoy your outing!
