Geocache Description:

The cache has been placed near a public footpath on Hest Bank Shores.

On a clear day the cache site offers excellent views across Morecambe Bay to Flookburgh, Grange-over-Sands and the Lake District peaks beyond. The mudflats of the Bay and surrounding sea marshes provide an important habitat for many species of sea birds so this area is a twitcher’s paradise.
Unfortunately, the Bay, despite it’s beauty, also has a very treacherous and dangerous side to it. Despite warnings the Bay has cost many lives in the past and the lifeboat crew gets numerous call outs a week. Tragically, in February 2004 a large group of Chinese cockle pickers perished in the rising tides.

Morecambe Bay can be crossed BUT crossing is only possible at low tides and with the leadership of a professional guide. Under no circumstances should anybody attempt to cross or venture too far onto the mudflats! As well as the ever shifting channels there is also the extreme danger of quick sands! Guides have been employed by the Duchy of Lancaster since 1536 and the latest in a long line is Cedric Robinson, official Queen’s Guide.

The cache is best approached from the Coastal Road (A5105), crossing the railway line at the level crossing in Hest Bank. There is plenty of free parking available further down the lane and you should be able to drive to within 0.2 miles of the cache. The footpath is fairly sturdy, although can be wet after high tides. You should not have much of a problem using a good all-terrain pushchair on the footpath.

There are plenty of water channels in the nearby salt marshes so young children will need to be watched. As this area is very popular with dog walkers and other nature lovers it gets very busy, especially at weekends, so stealth may be required.
