Geocache Description:

You will wind into Fort Valley on hard surfaced roads and then be led up Powell’s Mountain on bumpy gravel roads. After you park, you’ll be walking the orange-blazed Massanutten trail for most of the way on the forest road to the reservoir.

The first settler to Fort Valley—even before George Washington surveyed the area—was a man named Powell, and it is said he was a fugitive. He chose this valley because of the difficult terrain, which acted as his fortress. The area soon became known as Powell’s Fort Valley and then was just shortened to Fort Valley, or The Fort. It is 2.3 miles one way if you stay on the forest road. If you choose to bear left to stay on the Massanutten, this will also take you to the cache, and it is a little shorter. Please note there are water crossings on both road and trail. But it is an easy hike, with not much elevation gain, that children will enjoy. I have kept koz’s original theme of camo, so you’ll find plastic army figures inside the cache. Take one for each member of your group. And then enjoy the beauty of the reservoir!
