Geocache Description:

Second in a series of nine caches set within the magnificent Stourhead Estate, taking in Stourhead House a Palladian mansion and Park Hill Camp, an Iron Age hillfort.

The circular walk of around 7km, will guide you away from the busy house and gardens, and into open parkland, woodland glades and peaceful lakeside settings, taking in many of the features not widely viewed by those visiting this rich and varied corner of Wiltshire’s historic landscape today. You should allow at least 2.5 hours to complete all 9 caches.

The area has been managed by the National Trust since 1946, although all of this series of caches are outside of the gardens and house itself, and hence there is no need to purchase any entry tickets to complete the series.

The second in the series is placed near the obelisk and ha-ha. The obelisk standing today was a replacement to the Chilmark stone obelisk placed here in 1746-1748 by Henry Hoare in memory of his late father. The existing obelisk was fashioned from Bath stone and placed on the same spot in 1839. Its position, at the highest point along Fir Walk (a wide grassy ridge high above the garden), is designed to allow vistas from most areas of his gardens. A lightning conductor runs down one side of the obelisk and if you look closely you will see the stone is marked top to bottom from lightning strikes.
