Geocache Description:

About SideTracked We have Motorway Mayhem. We have A-Road Anarchy (cos there aren’t many motorways in Wales!). But what about public transport users? SideTracked Caches are intended to provide quick cache-and-dashes at train stations. They should be placed where it will not cause alarm, as in this day and age, public transport is under greater scrutiny than ever before. For more information on SideTracked Caches, please visit the SideTracked website.

Hanborough railway station is a railway station serving the nearby village of Long Hanborough in Oxfordshire, England. As a result of the Cotswold Line being singled the former up platform is the only one now in use for both up and down trains. It is served by First Great Western trains between Oxford and Worcester.

The Oxford Bus Museum is situated in the former goods yard.

History

The station was opened by the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway in 1853.

There were a few interruptions to its generally uneventful history. Between 1854 and 1861 it served as a junction for Oxford-bound passengers changing from through trains between Worcester and London Euston, for which role a refreshment room was provided.

In January 1965 it was the destination for the funeral train of Sir Winston Churchill hauled by Battle of Britain Class locomotive No. 34051 Winston Churchill.

In January 1966 the station was unstaffed, following which the standard O.W.& W.R. wooden station building and goods shed were demolished.

It was renamed from Handborough in 1993.

Local Information

The villages of Long Hanborough and Church Hanborough are situated at the gateway to the Cotswolds in West Oxfordshire near Blenheim Palace.

All of Church Hanborough and parts of Long Hanborough are designated as Conservation Areas.
Part of Long Hanborough is also in the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

A Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) can be found between the two villages.
