Signal Hill National Historic Site of Canada

Little is known about the formation of the Hill itself, below is a brief history of the mighty mountains and glaciers that formed what thousands of locals and tourists alike have come to appreciate.

The Mountains
When you look up at Signal Hill, with it's rocky summit rising 500 feet above St. John's Harbour, it's an amazing sight. What is truely amazing is to realize that Signal Hill is part of a long mountain range that was once higher that the Swiss Alps. During hundreds of Millions of years it was worn down by the process of weathering and erosion, to become Signal Hill we see today.

The Glaciers
The last Ice Age came about by natural causes. The changes in the Earth's orbit slowly altered the world's climate, between 10,000 and 25,000 years ago. Signal Hill, Alvalon and Burin Peninsulas, were covered by a blanket of ice, probably between 1500-2500 feet thick in places.

The Harbour
Signal Hill stands above St. John's Harbour The Harbour is one of the world's most sheltered ports. Over a million years, a rock basin was carved out at the foot of Signal Hill, first by rivers, then by a powerful glacier. After the ice melted, the basin became a freshwater lake. Aboout 10,000 years ago, the sea level slowly rose above the Narrows an flooded the lake basin-and St. John's Harbour was born.
