In places around southern Namadgi National Park and adjacent land
in NSW, the prominent square rock of Sentry Box Rock can be seen.
From the Yaouk road the views are spectacular, and for 20 years I
have wanted to climb up here. It's not hard to work out how the
mountain gained it name. In fact the mountain is two peaks, the
higher being Sentry Box Mountain while Sentry Box Rock crowns the
second peak.
The views from these summits are exceptional, and this peak
deserves a cache just like its big brother nearby. It is almost a
spiritual experience to come here and explore the boulders. From
either summit you can see the Main Range (Kociuszko National Park)
and one of the best distant views of Mt Jagungal I have ever seen.
The view to nearby Gudgenby is breathtaking, and many other ACT
peaks are there on display. Below you are excellent views into the
Yaouk valley, farms and houses.
To reach the summits of Sentry Box we rode about 7km along a good
quality fire trail up the Naas Valley. This is an easy ride and can
be done in less than a hour. There is no easy route up the
mountain, as it is all upwards (obviously). You can find your way
between the two peaks, and if you choose your route wisely you can
avoid much of the scrub and keep to the boulders and large slabs of
granite. We did our research on maps and Google Earth, marking a
series of way points as a guide for our route up the mountain. The
undergrowth in most places on the this second peak is not dense, as
this part of Namadgi did not burn in the 2003. There are, however,
a lot of fallen trees to be climbed over, and pockets of scrub in
moist areas. Allow yourself the full day to do this cache if you
also decide to do its partner on Sentry Box mountain (and why would
you come this far and not do both?). You MUST come prepared with a
jacket, map, hat, and a map or GPS with mapping capability. The
appropriate map is Yaouk 1:25 000.
Our cache was placed in the company of McPhan who came along for
the walk. We had an exhilarating day in a superb location, and want
others to enjoy this place. McPhan will log a find after the FTF.
Please replace the cache carerfully to conceal it from muggles. Up
here? Yes, this is a popular spot with walkers and the odd climber.
Please make the cache safe for the next cacher.
