For years I have wanted to climb to the top of Sentry Box Mountain.
Mr Winglen and I came up this valley for the first time about 20
years ago, looking to climb Gudgenby, surely everyone's favourite
mountain. On that visit we had to give up before we even got close
to Gudgenby, defeated by a day of heavy rain.
Then several years later on a trip around the back road from
Adaminaby through the Yaouk valley my fascination turned to Sentry
Box. From the road you get a great view of the prominent square
rock that gives the mountain its name. In fact the mountain is two
peaks, the higher being Sentry Box Mountain while Sentry Box Rock
crowns the second peak.
The views from this mountain top are something to behold, and this
peak deserves a cache. It is almost a spiritual experience to come
here and explore the boulders and spectacular curving rock faces.
From either summit you can see the Main Range (Kosciuszko National
Park) and one of the best distant views of Mt Jagungal to be seen.
The view to nearby Gudgenby is breathtaking, and many other ACT
peaks are there on display.
To reach the summit of Sentry Box mountain we rode about 7km along
a good quality fire trail up the Naas Valley. This is an easy ride
and can be done in less than a hour. There is no easy route up the
mountain, as it is all upwards (obviously). We did our research on
maps and Google Earth, marking a series of way points as a guide
for our route up the mountain. The undergrowth is not dense because
this part of Namadgi did not burn in the 2003 bushfires. There are,
however, a lot of fallen trees to be climbed over. Allow yourself
the full day to do this cache if you also decide to do its partner
by Sentry Box rock itself. To locate the cache you must enter our
rocky grotto, and don't forget to take the spoiler photos.
You MUST come prepared with a jacket, hat, plenty of water and a
map or GPS with mapping capability. The appropriate map is Yaouk
1:25 000.
Our cache was placed in the company of McPhan who came along for
the walk, and will log a find after the FTF. We had an exhilarating
day in a superb location, and want others to enjoy this place. For
the FTF we have left a small novelty gift, based on the expectation
that the FTF will be male and over forty (if you're not, then I'll
enjoy the surprise). If you like the item in the zip lock bag,
consider it/them yours.
