Mountain Top Cache
When the nice lady at the Katahdin Iron Works gate said she never heard of anyone asking to climb Saddleback Mt., I knew I had my work cut out for me. This cache is located on the west side of the 3000 ft.Saddleback Mt . in TB R11 in the Katahdin Iron Works Area. (See map 42 Maine Gazetteer). Directions are as follows: Route 16 north to the Katahdin Iron works road 45,24.486n and 069,03.723w. Check in at the gate:45,26.704n and 069,10.435w. A fee of six dollars is needed for day use. Proceed to the B Pond road:45,27.813n and 069,12.378w. As you approach the parking coordinates, you will be looking at the mountain while descending the hill. Active woods cutting is in the area so be alert to big machines. I parked off the road at:45,31.160n and 069,08.894w. I started my assent up the mountain on skidder trail 45,31.101n and 069,08968w. It is approximately 0.7 miles to the 9 mm ammo can. The road to the parking coordinates is well maintained allowing use of a low clearance car. The hike to the cache is tough. The skidder road thins out quickly and leads into very dense growth requiring slow and careful hiking. Blowdowns, six foot jack firs, slippery rocks and steep inclines make this cache difficult. The ammo can is located on the upper edge of a large rock slide. The views are great. The view at the top of the mountain is not worth the effort to climb. Wear a low profile back pack, brings walking sticks, and wear sturdy hiking boots.The cache is not winter accessible. Save this cache when you want a challenge. Good luck...Groleau
