The Old Shoreham Toll Bridge linking Shoreham to Lancing was
built across the River Adur in 1781. It was bought by the LBSCR
railway company in 1861 when the company started charging tolls.
The tolls were collected up until 1970 when it was replaced by the
road flyover. The Toll Bridge closed to motorised traffic on 7
December 1970. It was then taken over by West Sussex County Council
and was, and still is, used solely for pedestrians and cyclists. It
received Grade II listing status in 1984.
In 1997 after inspection it was deemed unsafe and in places
metal supports were erected. This was always only ever going to be
a temporary measure. This year the bridge was closed and has been
completely refurbished. Work was completed in August 2008. This was
thanks to campaigning and fundraising by a group called Friends of
Old Shoreham Toll Bridge. It was originally the councils intention
to simply let it rot away.
This would have been a travesty. Not only is it well used, but
it is a beautiful place to be, especially first thing in the
morning. The views are lovely looking both ways. The new bridge is
an excellent piece of work and will hopefully stand for many years
to come.
You are looking for a brass pet id holder, like one that hangs
from a collar, hidden somewhere on the Toll Bridge. Inspired by
some of
Mike and Christines hides I have made this one a bit of a
teaser. I managed to get pretty good accuracy (6.8ft) so hopefully
the co-ordinates will be pretty good. I started this at 3.5
difficulty, but after taking advice I have upped to to 5. We'll see
how people get on. Obviously it is a small area to look in and
terrain is very good. There will be a lot of muggle passing by so
you may well get some funny looks. Might I suggest you wear a
fluorescent jacket, carry a clipboard and pretend your gps is a
walkie talkie!
Best of luck!
