Geocache Description:

SAM WAS HERE

Who was Uncle Sam?

Although there is no definitive answer, the best story involves Samuel Wilson who was born in Menotomy, Massachusetts. (Now Arlington). During the war of 1812 Wilson was a meat supplier in Troy, N.Y. His barrels of meat were stamped U.S. which legend claims many joke as meaning Uncle Sam. The first references in print to Uncle Sam did come during the War of 1812, however, none of the contemporary newspapers in Troy referenced Sam Wilson as Uncle Sam. Does that mean he was not the origin of Uncle Sam? Well, in 1961 the U.S. Congress saluted “Uncle Sam Wilson of Troy, New York, as the progenitor of America's National symbol of Uncle Sam”. That was good enough to get a statue erected near his birthplace in 1976.

Why you are looking for the cache take the time to look at the “bronze relief depicts the life and work of Samuel Wilson in Troy and Mason, New Hampshire, and in Menotomy, Massachusetts”.

Good luck and good caching,

Loch Cache and Sam
