Geocache Description:

This is located within the day use area of Lakeport State Park.

In honor of the 40th anniversary of the 1968 Democratic Convention and the man who help make that event historical, I've placed a cache in the spot where it all begain. I had the opportunity to meet Tom Hayden in the summer of 2002 when he came back to Lakeport the place where he wrote the "Port Huron Statement". He showed me and fellow Park Ranger Gary Young where he sat under a tree in 1962 and set in place the events that lead to his arrest in 1968 as one of the "Chicago Seven" at the infamous convention. In 1962 this area of the park was owned by the AFL-CIO and was used by varies labor unions as a summer retreat and meeting place.
Myth and legend has it that in 1962 Hayden meet with then Teamster President James R. Hoffa about turning the nations college students against Bobby Kennedy, they had breakfest overlooking Lake Huron were the grill north of the toilet building sits. Now you know the rest of the story!!
