Dry Rocks
Suche skaly (Dry Rocks) create a significant landscape dominant of the Male Skaly region. It is an asymmetrical forked rock ridge between Malá Skála and Zelezny Brod, that is rising over the left bank of the river Jizera. Due to its typical look, the rocks are also nicknamed Kantorovy Varhany ("The Teacher's Organ").
They are different from other rocks by its hardness. These beautiful rock formations were created in younger tercier period thanks to the repeated tectonic movements of the so-called Lusatian Fault. Geologically it is a solid cenoman siliceous sandstones and agglomerates that were tectonically broken and raised over the younger chalk layers. By the influence of moving Earth plates and their vertical rotation to the ground, Suche skaly received its current shape and look. Distinctly cracked, tectonically cooled and silicic rocks are dramatically formed by processes of frost weathering that created sharp peak rocks, towers, ruptures and blocks. In some places they appear like tectonic breccia, that means rocks broken into small sharp fragments by pressure. It is a unique geomorphologic location.
The whole rock complex creates a significant locality for rock-climbing. The rocks are not only exceptional for their hardness but unlike the other rocks that stay wet after rain for a long time, the "Dry Rocks" dry very fast, this is also the reason for their name.
Suche skaly were pronounced national protected area in 1956. Today they are in the category "National natural landmark", although rock climbing is allowed here, public access is limited because the sand areas around are endangered by erosion. Rock climbing has strict rules that is adjusted by an exception of the Czech Republic government.
And now to the cache itself:
Since there is no official marked path around the rocks, I decided for a less "invasive" method of geocaching here. Parking is possible at the public parking lot in Besedice. This parking is open all-year, during the season it is paid between 9am and 6pm. From there start on the green path and then to the yellow tourist path towards Sokol. From there find a marked path that leads directly to the view point. Document your visit here and enjoy probably the best view to Suche Skaly and then you can start a short walk on a yellow path around Besedické skály that will show you the most significant places of this area. The main group of rocks is Chleviste with "Sluje exulanta Vaclava Sadovskeho ze Sloupna" (Cave of exultant Vaclav Sadovsky) with beautiful views. The group of rocks "U Kalicha" (By the chalice) among five rock gorges is hiding an altar with an engraved chalice and year 1634. The place was a hideout during the counter-reformation times for the non-Catholics and also provided asylum to other in other dangerous times. During the trip you can find caches "Skalni Bludiste" and "Zbirohy".
You will walk through the natural protected area of Cesky Raj (Bohemain Paradise) and therefore please observe all rules!!!
To log this cache you will need:
- To add a picture of yourself with a GPS with the background of Suche skaly - see the coordinates for the view point. If you are geocaching alone, you can add just a picture of your GPS with clear coordinates with the rocks in background.

Suche skaly tvori vyznamnou krajinnou dominantu Maloskalska. Jedna se o asymetricky rozeklany skalnaty hrbet, mezi Malou Skalou a Zeleznym Brodem, ktery se tyci do vyse nad levym brehem reky Jizery. Dle sveho typickeho vzhledu se jim mistne rika Kantorovy varhany. Od ostatnich skal se odlisuji svou tvrdosti. Tyto nadherne skalni utvary vznikly v mladsim tercieru diky opakovanym tektonickym pohybum podle tzv. Luzicke poruchy. Geologicky se jedna o pevne cenomanske kremite piskovce a slepence, ktere byly tektonicky rozlamany a vyzdvyzeny nad mladsi kridove vrstvy. Vlivem posouvani zemskych ker a jejich pootocenim kolmo k zemskemu povrchu dostaly Suche skaly svuj dnesni tvar i vzhled. Silne rozpukane, tektonicky ohlazene a prokremenele horniny jsou vyrazne modelovany procesy mrazoveho zvetravani, jez vytvorily ostre vrcholove skaly, veze, stity, trhliny a bloky. Misty pripominaji tektonicke brekcie, coz jsou skaly, které byly pod tlakem rozlamany na male ostre fragmenty. Jedna se o unikatni geomorfologickou lokalitu, ktera je u nas zcela ojedinela.
Cely skalni komplex tvori vyznamnou horolezeckou lokalitu. Skaly vynikaji nejen svoji pevnosti, ale na rozdil od ostatnich skal, ktere zustavaji po desti dlouho mokre, tyto velice rychle osychaji. Odtud pochází jejich název.
Suche skaly byly vyhlaseny chranenym uzemim v roce 1956. Dnes jsou chraneny v kategorii narodni prirodni pamatka. Ackoli je v této lokalite povoleno horolezectvi, je zde pohyb verejnosti omezen, nebot piskove osypy zde velmi snadno podlehaji erozi. Pro horolezeni zde plati prisna pravidla, upravena mj. vyjimkou Vlady CR.
A nyni k samotne cache: Jelikoz v bezprostrednim okoli skal neni zatim zadna oficielne znacena cesta, zvolil jsem metodu mene invazivni. Parkovani je mozne na verejnem parkovisti v Besedicich. Jedna se o celorocni parkoviste, ktere je v sezone zpoplatnene od 9:00-18:00 hodin. Odtud se vydate po zelene a nasledne po zlute turisticke znacce smer Sokol. Dale pak po znacene odbocce, ktera vas privede primo na vyhlidku. Zde si zdokumentujete svou navstevu, pokochate se asi nejlepsim pohledem na Suche Skaly a pak se muzete vydat na nedlouhy, zlute znaceny okuh besedickymi skalami, ktery vas seznami s nejvyznamnejsimi misty teto oblasti. Hlavni skupinou skal je Chleviste se Sluji exulanta Vaclava Sadovskeho ze Sloupna a nadhernymi vyhlidkami. V seskupeni skal U Kalicha uprostred peti skalnich rokli se skryva oltar s vytesanym kalichem a letopoctem 1634. Misto byvalo utocistem nekatoliku v dobach protireformace a i jinak poskytovalo azyl v nebezpecnych dobach. Behem vyletu si muzete odlovit i cache Skalni Bludiste a Zbirohy.
Pamatujte, ze se budete pohybovat v chranene krajinne oblasti Cesky Raj a proto prosim vsechny o dodrzovani pravidel o pohybu a pobytu v teto oblasti!!!
K uznani vaseho logu je treba: pridat k logu fotografii vas s GPSkou s pozadím Suchych skal dle uvedenych souradnic na vyhlidce. U lovcu samotaru postaci foto GPS s jasnymi souradnicemi s pozadim Suchych skal.
