Many places on this route have change over the years, but probably
none as more so as Stonebridge on the A281. One September night in
1968 a heavy storm caused Guildford and the surrounding areas to
flood. The river bridge at Stonebridge was washed away. A bailey
bridge was installed with traffic lights and the road was reopened.
Both the river bridge and the old railway bridge were demolished
and replaced with the present one.
In 1965, The Guildford - Horsham line was the only branch line in
Surrey to be axed by the infamous Dr Beeching. Whilst the line was
removed, the trackbed has remained undeveloped.
In the 1980s, the line took on new life as it was redeveloped into
the Downs Link, a public footpath and bridlepath linking the North
and South Downs.
