Geocache Description:

This cache was placed on the Iron Goat Trail.

Standing at the cache you are 1712 miles from Saint Paul, Minn.(as the train ran) In those 1,700 miles this stretch through Steven's Pass were the most treacherous that railroad passengers had to face. The crossing required an engine at each end of the train to make the steep grade and to reverse the direction of locomotion as the train went through 5 hairpin switchbacks. Two on the eastside and three on the westside. This process would take anywhere from 5 to 25 hours.
