Revolving Auditorium Ceský Krumlov / a historical
retrospection
The institution of theatre has had its "right of domicile" in Ceský
Krumlov since the Middle Ages - it was this place where new theatre
forms and traditions have often been born. Apart from the
activities of the Jesuit and court theatres at the Baroque theatre,
the boundary of the "modern" theatre is unquestionably the
phenomenon of the open-air SOUTH BOHEMIAN THEATRE FESTIVAL. The
person present at the origin of later activities was the notable
theatre architect and stage designer Joan Brehms (1907-1995) with
the director of the South Bohemian Theatre Otto Haas.
The first, "small-scale" experimental performance was the play
"Lost Face" by Weisenborn on the 9th June 1958. The first
improvised revolving auditorium could seat hardly 60 spectators and
was driven by human power. However, a "large" revolving auditorium
for 400 visitors was built as early as a year later, and the team
Haas - Brehms staged "The Lantern" by Jirásek in front of it.
For the further - sixtieth - year the auditorium has got a new
appearance, its seating capacity is extended to 550 seats, it is
firmly installed in the ground and driven by an electric motor. The
"new" revolving auditorium, which was put into operation in 1994,
was constructed by the joint-stock company a.s. Škoda Plzen.
It has a seating capacity for 644 spectators, smooth motion in both
directions and the weight of 650 tons. It enables to realise the
original idea of the inventors of this theatre principle, i.e.
"developing the story, like on a broad canvass, around the
auditorium rotating on an amphitheatrical construction, built in
front of the summer palace Bellaria".
Technical data:
Seating capacity: 644 spectators, total weight of construction: 650
tons, base diameter: 21.3 m. Elevation: 7.6 m, driven by 4 electric
motors with the power of 15 KW (1460 revolutions/min). Number of
wheels carrying the revolving auditorium: 120 pieces
