Na sua forma mais básica, uma Villa romana, é uma moradia rural
edificada no centro de uma propriedade agrícola da Roma Antiga,
sendo normalmente, a residência de campo de um senhor de grandes
posses.
Este
tipo de residências tinha todo o conforto da civilização romana:
Termas, Jardins, Cavalariças, e até Teatros. Tendo como função a
exploração agrícolas, algumas chegavam a ter estruturas para
alojamento de escravos e servos e Celeiro, Moinho ou
Lagar. |

A Estação Arqueológica da Villa Romana do Montinho das Laranjeiras
situa-se no lugar das Laranjeiras, concelho e freguesia de
Alcoutim, na região Algarvia do Baixo Guadiana, num local
privilegiado de grande beleza, junto ao rio Guadiana, numa região
já distanciada das praias douradas de águas cristalinas, mas cheio
de encanto e com muito para ver e conhecer.
Em
1876, uma grande cheia deu a conhecer ruínas de construções feitas
nos períodos de ocupação Mourisca, Visigoda e Romana.
O
Montinho das Laranjeiras apresenta vestígios de ocupação humana
desde o século I até à época Almóada (século XII-XIII). A época de
ocupação Romana distingue-se sobretudo pela importância do edifício
da "pars frctuaria", local onde se guardariam os produtos
agrícolas, datado do século I, verificando-se então que na altura
existiriam importantes trocas comerciais com o Norte de
África.
Já
dos séculos VI e VII datará uma igreja, do qual se observam ainda
os vestígios da sua planta cruciforme, existindo outros vestígios
atribuídos ao período Mourisco, dos séculos XII e XIII.
A
importância do rio Guadiana far-se-ia sentir desde remotos
períodos, pensando-se inclusivamente que algumas habitações
funcionariam como hospedaria deste entreposto comercial.
Este
conjunto poderá ser mesmo entendido como integrante num conjunto
mais abrangente, constituído ainda por Guerreiros do Rio, Álamo e
Foz de Odeleite, dotado de afinidades evidentes e de estruturas
que, localizadas num monte, serviam de algum modo os outros
quatro.

a pena conhecer os traços da história que marcaram este território
de grande beleza natural, aproveitando o cenário para melhor

The Archaeological Station of the Villa Romana Montinho das
Laranjeiras lies in the place of Laranjeiras, county and parish of
