Kolarbyns historia
I området kring Skärsjön finns hundratals rester av kolbottnar som vittnar om den storhetstid då järnet byggde upp Sveriges ekonomi..
Kolarbyn byggdes under vintern 1996 när Skinnskattebergs Kommun lät bygga tolv kolarkojor vid Skärsjön några kilometer utanför byn. Det skapade förutsättningar för att föra kulturarvet med järnframställning och kolning vidare till kommande generationer. Tanken var bland annat att folk som var intresserade av kolning skulle kunna övernatta i kolarkojorna när de lärde sig att kola.
Sommaren 2004 öppnades kolarkojorna som vandrarhem av upplevelseföretaget Skogens Konung i samarbete med Svenska Turistförevannningen (STF).
Skogens Konung vann Grand Travel Award - Ekoturismpriset 2009.

The history of Kolarbyn
Kolarbyn was founded in the Winter of 1996 as enthusiastic villagers from Skinnskatteberg decided to build a collection of traditional forest huts by the shore of lake Skärsjön. The idea was to create conditions for people interested in charcoal buring to practice their techniques in the way it had been practiced in the region for centruries. Charcoal burning is a traditional method for producing charcoal which was used in the former Swedish iron industry, often referred to as the foundation of the present Swedish economic welfare. The genuine Kolarbyn charcoal site would enable practical knowledge as well as it´s belonging cultural traditions and folklore to be passed on to future generations.
In 2004 Kolarbyn was opened for the public in cooperation with the Swedish Tourist Association (STF).
