Quiet church in the busy city center
The church is, in fact, two churches in one. The small one is now used as a funeral chapel. The large one (devoted to St. Peter and St. Paul) is the actual church. The history of St. Barbara's Parish dates back to 1866. However, the first church was built in 1781 as a chapel belonging to a cemetery that was the first one outside the Warsaw city walls (yes, this place was outside the city at that time). This small chapel was used since 1866 as a parish church, and it has survived until today (see the photo). The large church was constructed in 1886. It was severely damaged in 1939 (beginning of World War II) by a blast of ammunition and soon rebuilt. In 1944, after the fall of the Warsaw Uprising, the Nazis deliberately demolished it by setting up mines in the foundations and blowing the whole church down. This was part of the plan to raze the whole city to its foundations. The current Church of St. Peter and St. Paul is a construction from the 1950s built on the original foundations. An interesting artifact inside is a 1:1 copy of the Shroud of Turin (see http://www.sindone.org/ ). It is an oasis of tranquillity in a busy city, just one minute walk from the Marriott Hotel and two minutes from the Central Railway Station. EN: The cache is a camo. PLEASE place the contained back EXACTLY as it was hidden. Be careful and patient, as the area can be watched by people wandering around the church. The cache is *outside* of the church grounds.
