Inspired by the many city-micro-caches abroad, I think this Brussels monument deserves one, too. The Brussel's Atomium was designed for the International Exhibition of Brussels in 1958, and was a symbol for the Belgian Metal Industries of the time (see also GC10XM8 "Heyzel 1958"). It was not meant to survive the Exhibition, but it's popularity and success kept it alive. Since it's renovation from 2003 to 2006, it is - again - a major landmark in Brussels.
The Atomium represents an iron crystal, 165 billion times magnified, in the "body centered cubic system" configuration, with vertical body diagonal. Each of the 9 spheres is 18m in diameter and holds 2 "event" floors. The connecting tubes are 3m wide and 18m or 23m in length.
As the Atomium is positioned with a vertical body diagonal, it "rests" on one of the corner spheres. The resulting lower three of it's corner spheres are suported by large bipods. As a result of this, the three "upper" corner spheres are not open to visitors, as the weight of the structure plus visitors would be too large for the tubes holding the spheres together.
The Atomium's total height measures 102m. The top sphere holds a restaurant and 360° panorama floor.
The challenge here is not so much in finding the small cache - it's placed at an obvious hiding spot (for the stretched arm) - but more in retrieving, logging and replacing it.

Naar aanleiding van stads-micro-caches in vele buitenlandse steden, vind ik dat ook dit Brusselse monument er eentje verdiend. Het Atomium is oorspronkelijk gebouwd voor de Wereldtentoonstelling van Brussel in 1958, en stond symbool voor de Belgische metaalindustrie van die tijd (zie ook GC10XM8 "Heyzel 1958"). Het was niet de bedoeling dat het na de tentoonstelling bleef staan, maar de populariteit en het succes ervan hielden dit monument levend. Sinds de renovatie van 2003 tot 2006 staat het weer volop in de belangstelling.
Het Atomium stel een ijzerkristal voor (kristal is niet echt juist, maar goed...) dat 165 miljard maal vergroot is, in een "body centered cubic system" voorstelling, met één diagonaal verticaal opgesteld. Elk van de 9 bollen is 18m in diameter en heeft 2 verdiepingen. De buizen tussen de bollen zijn 3m breed en 18m of 23m lang. Omdat het Atomium een verticaal geplaatste diagonaal heeft, "rust" het op één van de hoek-bollen. De resulterende laagstgelegen drie hoek-bollen rusten op hun beurt op ondersteunende hoekpilaren. Hierdoor zijn er ook drie hogergelegen hoek-bollen die niet voor het publiek toegankelijk zijn, omdat het gewicht van de constructie plus bezoekers te zwaar zou zijn voor de verbindende buizen die die bollen op hun plaats houden.
De totale hoogte van het Atomium is 102m. De bovenste bol huisvest een restaurant en een 360° panorama-verdieping.
De uitdaging van deze cache zit hier niet in het vinden van de cache - hij hangt op een "voor de (gestrekte) hand liggende" plaats verstopt - maar wel in het zo discreet en ongemerkt mogelijk loggen. Een beetje zoals "La Lunette de Mémé 100.000 volt" (GC1012F) in het centrum van Brussel en "AntwerPoly-Meir" (GC13XKJ) in Antwerpen.

Inspiré par de nombreuses ‘city-micro-cache’ à l’étranger, je pense que ce monument bruxellois devait avoir la sienne aussi. L’Atomium de Bruxelles fut imaginé pour l’Exposition Universelles de Bruxelles en 1958, il était le symbole de l’Industrie Métallurgique Belge de l’époque (voir aussi GC10XM8 ‘Heysel 1958’). Il n’était pas prévu qu’il survive à l’exposition, mais son succès et sa popularité permirent de le maintenir en vie. Depuis sa rénovation (de 2003 à 2006), c’est a nouveau un lieu marquant de la vie bruxelloise.
L’Atomium est un cristal de fer agrandi 165 milliards de fois, représenté en 3 dimensions et posé sur sa diagonale centrale. Chacune des 9 boules a un diamètre de 18m et renferme 2 niveaux consacrés à divers événements. Les tubes de jonction font 3m de diamètre et 18 ou 23 mètres de long. Comme l’édifice est élevé sur sa diagonale, il repose donc sur une de ses sphères de coin. Par conséquent les trois sphères contiguës repose sur de larges bipodes. Ceci entraîne que les 3 boules supérieures sont fermées au public. En effet, le poids de la structure plus celui des visiteurs serait trop important pour les tubes qui tiennent les boules ensemble.
L’Atomium fait au total 102m de haut. La sphère supérieure abrite un restaurant panoramique offrant une vue de 360°.
La difficulté ici, n’est pas tellement de trouver le boîtier (caché à un endroit facile d’accès pour un bras tendu), mais de prendre la cache, de s’y ‘logger’ et de la replacer discrètement. Un peu comme pour ‘ La lunette de Mémé 100.000 volts’ (GC1012F) dans le centre de Bruxelles ou ‘AntwerPoly-Meir’ (GC13XKJ) à Anvers
