The Radcliffe family, who originally came from Lancashire, were wealthy Catholic landowners in Northumberland and Cumbria. The Derwentwater/Radcliffe connection came about by the marriage of Edward Radcliffe, a younger son of Sir Thomas Radcliffe of Derwentwater, in Cumberland, to an heiress of Dilston Northumberland, Anne Cartington.
In 1688 Sir Francis Radcliffe was ennobled as the First Earl of Derwentwater.
A grand house with a drawbridge across to the mainland once existed on Lord's Island on Derwentwater. Dating from around 1460 this was one of the residences of the Earls of Derwentwater. The house was pillaged and destroyed in 1645 by Sir Wilfred Lawson who occupied the neighbouring island of St Hubert and a certain Captain John Stoddard who sold the furniture and fittings without authority. The house was never rebuilt, and became so dilapidated it was pulled down but its foundations can still be determined; the stone was transported into Keswick and used to make a meeting hall; the building is still standing today right in the middle of the market square, and is known as the Moot Hall, now the home of the Tourist Information Centre.
In 1715, James the 3rd Earl of Derwentwater and his brother Charles joined the Jacobite rising against King George I. Both were captured at the defeat of the Jacobite army and James was executed in 1716. Charles escaped but was recaptured while returning to England in 1745 and executed. The family lost their title and their estates were confiscated in 1731.
Before leaving Keswick for the last time and for the final battle at Preston James supped his last pint from the saddle outside of The George Inn in Keswick, it’s oldest hostelry – footsteps of history good excuse for a pint!
