The Necropolis of
Carenque - national monument since 1936 - consists of three collective tombs, excavated with tools of chert/flint in the limestone outcrops, therefore also known as Artificial Grottos.
They date of the end of the Neolithic period (3rd/4th millennium B.C.) and belong in a Mediterranean cultural-funerary tradition, but evidencing specific characteristics. Among others necropolises of this type, the artificial grottos of
Quinta do Anjo, in
Palmela, of the
Alapraia and of
São Pedro do Estoril are of relevance.
The access to the grottos is through a corridor that communicates with the funerary chamber by a small opening. The corridor and the skylight (of the funerary chamber) were covered by flagstones of calcareous rock, closing the structure to the exterior.

The way to the Necropolis (and the cache) is asphalted but is closed.
You may park your car at N 38º 46.190 W 9º 14.735 and walk about 400 yd. The landscape isn’t the best but the Necropolis certainly makes up for it.
Please take a pen or pencil to write your log.
THE CACHE ISN’T INSIDE THE NECROPOLIS NOR BEHIND ANY FENCED SPACE.
This is the first cache that we hide.
After being vandalized, the cache is now on new coordinates and has a new (and smaller) container.
