| Steenkool bestaat uit afzettingen van plantenresten die in het Geologisch verleden (de West-Europese steenkool in het carboon), zijn gevormd na langdurig aan hoge druk en warmte zijn blootgesteld, waarbij tamelijk zuivere koolstof en vluchtige verbindingen ontstonden, waarvan de laatste weer grotendeels zijn ontsnapt. De transformatie verloopt met toenemende blootstelling aan druk en temperatuur van veen via bruinkool naar steenkool en antraciet uiteindelijk naar grafiet. Dat voor dit proces in principe geen lange tijd nodig is, is in diverse experimenten bewezen. Hierbij werd organisch materiaal aan sterke druk onderworpen waarbij zich binnen een paar dagen steenkool vormde. Deze earthcache gaat over de staatsmijn maurits. Hier werd voornamelijk vetkool gewonnen. De eerste schacht van deze mijn kwam in 1925 en de tweede in 1927. Officieel is de mijn in 1926 in gebruik genomen. Momenteel is er niet veel meer over van de mijn. Alleen de oude loonhal en de watertoren zijn nog te zien.

| Coal is a non-renewable fossil fuel formed in ecosystems in the Carboniferous age where plant remains were preserved by water and mud from oxidization and biodegradation, thus sequestering atmospheric carbon. Coal is a readily combustible black or brownish-black rock. It is a sedimentary rock, but the harder forms, such as anthracite coal, can be regarded as metamorphic rocks because of later exposure to elevated temperature and pressure. In the Netherlands Coal is extracted from the ground by underground coal mining. You will visit the coal mine Maurits, once the largest underground mine in the world. This earthcache is about mine Maurits. The first shaft is constructed in 1925 and the second in 1927. Officially the mine opened in 1926. Momentary there is not much left of the mine. Only the old wages building and the water tower are still there. |
