I hid this cache solely to help a travelbug reach it's destination. "George Washington" (a 25 cent piece attached to a dogtag) starting in England, was trying to reach Abraham Lincoln in Illinois. The cache I had planned on putting it in, over by the Lincoln statue, had been spending time on the Disabled List, so instead of traveling down to Springfield with the travelbug, I hid a new cache as near to this Lincoln as I could. To up the ante a bit, I added a buck for the "Buck" (fountain), a Where's George dollar bill. So there is a grand total of $1.25 in cash in the cache.
Originally to find the cache you would have to walk west until coming to the precise spot where you first see the statue of Lincoln.
As of May 20, 2013 the method of solving has been simplified, since a crucial tree in your line of sight has been growing out over the years, and you probably won't actually see Lincoln as soon as you are supposed to. It was inevitable, just a matter of time. I considered just moving the cache farther west, but eventually I'd be placing it in the middle of Columbus Drive. So now instead of "There's Lincoln... Where's George?" maybe I should rename it "By George... Where's Lincoln?"
To find the cache:
From the listed coordinates walk 175' east and find some roman numerals, signifying a year. (you can also see this 4 digit number on the 6th line of the stone marker in the grass) Call the 4-digit number
ABCD
CCD = the distance you must walk, in feet, (FROM THE LISTED COORDINATES, not the fountain)
BC minus 50 = the bearing from true north that you will walk in.
When you get to that point, start walking due west. Keep walking until you can suddenly see the Lincoln statue with an unobstructed view, but DO NOT WALK WEST MORE THAN 100 FEET! When you reach that spot, STOP and LOOK. Do you see Lincoln? Maybe you do... maybe you don't. It could depend on the season. Let us know.
Either way, at this spot you should be near "a corner".
THIS IS WHERE YOU SHOULD LOOK FOR THE CACHE
Use the additional hints, so you will know right where to look.
Please use good city tactics when looking, retrieving, logging and replacing. Avoid looking conspicuous at all times. Replace it where you found it, or where you know it belongs.
NOTE: There are several festivals held in Grant Park every year, and some of them could very likely make the cache inaccessible. If you are here during one of those events you may still do this cache.
Just find the numbers, project your waypoint from the listed coordinates, walk west as directed, and take note of your coordinates. DO NOT climb any fences to get to the cache! Just e-mail me your final coordinates at your determined ground zero. If they are correct, I'll permit you to log a find.
Also, the cache could be missing at any given time. If you think the cache is missing, and you believe you looked in the right spot, e-mail me as above, and describe where you looked, along with the coordinates you got, and I may then allow you to log it as found. I realize many people may have the oppurtunity to visit this place only once, and others get here very seldom. I wan't you to enjoy your visit.
While you're here why not go downwind of the "Buck" and cool off a bit. If you have a camera, have someone take your picture by the fountain and post it with your log. Most of all, have fun finding the cache and visiting Buckingham Fountain.
