Geocache Description:

Located in the Great Smoky Mtns National Park
Cades Cove area.

Note from DavidMac: Since the original owners have disappeared from this site, I have adopted this cache and it's partner rather than have them archived in order to keep these well-planned caches going. Over the years, however, Cades Cove has seen numerous upgrades and improvements that have made the original questions obsolete. My goal has been to keep these caches up-to-date while maintaining the spirit of the original descriptions. Over time the puzzles and questions have changed, but my hope is that you still get the same amount of enjoyment out of these caches today as when they were first listed.

Because there is no cache container to be found (this is a national park, after all), you will need to verify your visit by emailing me the answers to several of the questions along the way: (DO NOT post them in your log!)
1) At site #1, what is the name of the visitor that you used to obtain the north coordinate?
2) At site #5, How many stairs did you count to obtain the west coordinate?
3) At site #6, what building are you standing in front of?

AJ' Dad and Wirenut (the original creator of these virtual tours) stated, "Cades Cove is one of my most favorite places in the world. My family has been visiting there for thirty years or more. My brother and I decided to create these virtual multi-caches to show you some of our favorite spots in the cove."

Here’s how it works:
Start at the cache coordinates provided. At each location you will have to do one of two things to obtain a 3-digit number: find a word or count one or more objects. The math is simple and is intended to be done in the field or while stuck in a line of traffic waiting to drive to the next spot. If asked for a word, convert the first three letters to numbers using the key below:

A=1 B=2 C=3 D=4 E=5 F=6 G=7 H=8 I=9 J=0 K=1 L=2 M=3 N=4 O=5 P=6 Q=7 R=8 S=9 T=0 U=1 V=2 W=3 X=4 Y=5 Z=6

Examples:
1) Say your answer is the word “smoky”. Using the chart above gives us S=9 M=3 O=5. So the magic number is 935.
2) Say I ask you to count the number of chairs and tables at a site. You see 12 chairs and 4 tables. The magic number is 124.

Now, add your 3-digit number to the number given in parentheses. The result will be the 3 digits after the decimal in the coordinates to the next stage. If the sum is greater than 1000, simply drop the 1:

North: N35º 36.____ (650) (+ answer #1) -> 650+935 -> 1585 ->585 (drop the 1)
West: W083º 47.____ (582) (+answer #2) -> 582+124 -> 706

If calculated correctly, the answer is the coordinates of this cache page:
N35º 36.585
W083º 47.706

Ready? Then head to the coordinates above and answer the following questions:

--------
SITE #1 (cache coords)

North: What is the name of the artistic tourist who visited Great Smoky Mountains National Park and especially enjoyed the historic buildings?
West: What is the one-syllable word given for the 3,000 items that you are invited to imagine making by hand?

Coords to site 2:
N35º 36.(209)+ ________ = ________
W083º 49.(063)+ ________ = ________

--------
SITE #2

Walk about 1/3 of the way clockwise around the cemetery loop. Outside of the loop against the edge of the cemetery you will find a lone gravestone belonging to Mr. Seaton.
North: in what year did he pass away? Drop the 1.
West: About how old was he at the time of his death? Add 100.

Coords to site 3:
N35º 36.(560)+ ________ = ________
W083º 49.(437)+ ________ = ________

--------
SITE #3

North: look at the old-fashioned sign on the side of the building visible from the road. In what year was this establishment founded? Drop the 1.
West: Continue about 100 feet down the road beyond the building (consider walking so that you don’t block traffic while you write down the answers). A small plaque is attached to a rock on the right side of the road behind the barb wire fence. In what year did this group begin work here? Drop the 1.

Coords to site 4:
N35º 35.(271)+ ________ = ________
W083º 50.(667)+ ________ = ________

--------
SITE #4

North: According to the title of the sign at the coordinates, this is an early ____ community.
West: first word in the name of the only building here which is original to the site, not built by the NPS or moved from elsewhere.

Coords to site 5:
N35º 35.(954)+ ________ = ________
W083º 49.(963)+ ________ = ________

--------
SITE #5

North: About 100 feet before you reach the parking area, you will see a small sign with a two digit number and a name. Multiply the number by 10.
West: How many stairs (not counting the top or bottom floor itself) lead to the second story? How many windows are upstairs?

Coords to site 6:
N35º 36.(042)+ ________ = ________
W083º 46.(476)+ ________ = ________

--------
SITE #6

You made it! Now to claim your find, email me the answers to the three required questions found near the top of the cache page when posting your log.
