You will need a 4WD vehicle, ATV, or motorcycle to get to this
cache, and it is available only when the snow has melted. However,
you will be richly rewarded for your efforts with breathtaking
views of the Gospel Hump Wilderness. Be sure to check out the view
from the outhouse while you are there. We found signs of bears in
the area, so be watchful, and if you camp there, be sure to secure
your food. The evidence indicates that bears prefer Gatorade over
Tecate beer, though.
Cottontail Point is the site of a former Forest Fire Lookout. As
such, it qualifies for the Idaho Forest Fire Lookout Challenge. The
footings are still there, and one of them is marked with the
name Aermotor, which is a company that manufactures steel
windmills for farms. They also made the structure for the
platform at the Carey Dome Lookout, so we think the Lookout
at Cottontail Point was like the one at Carey Dome. If anyone
has any more information about this lookout site, please let us
know.
