Easy drive by cache placed at the top of Jawbone Hill, Grenoside
Birley Stone vantage point commands a magnificent view of the Don and Ewden valleys. In 1161 the Birley Stone was an agreed boundary point between lands belonging to the Lord of Hallamshire and the Benedictine Abbey of St. Wandrille in France. The bend in the road at this point is known locally as Jaw Bone Hill (although it is marked on the maps as Whalejaw Hill). Apparently, during the nineteenth century a pair of whale's jaw bones spanned Oughtibridge Lane here forming an archway tall enough for a loaded hay cart to be driven through. There is off road parking at the cache location for 2-3 cars. The cache is 35mm film container with log book & pencil only. **FTF Honours goes to MikeG**
