Este
penedo constitui um relevo residual deixado pela erosão das
formações geológicas das quais fazia parte. A sua aparência de um
pequeno cabeço isolado na paisagem atravessado por uma abertura em
forma de arco, fez com que fosse notado pelas populações e levou as
autoridades locais a preocuparem-se com a sua preservação.
O Penedo Furado foi esculpido em formações geológicas constituídas
por uma sucessão de camadas de arenitos de grão médio a grosseiro,
por vezes, muito grosseiro, ocorrendo níveis com presença abundante
de seixos e calhaus rolados que atingem grandes dimensões. A
componente mais fina é, fundamentalmente, do tipo siltoso, sendo,
no entanto, mais escassa. Ocorre uma alternância muito marcada
entre níveis mais finos e mais grosseiros, sendo visíveis por todo
o afloramento estruturas de estratificação
entrecruzada.
Para que possam validar o found, têm que ir ao local e
medir a distância (aproximada) entre as bases do arco do penedo e

This
small hill is a remnant of a much larger feature as a result of the
natural erosive processes that the surrounding geological
formations have undergone. The appearance of an isolated hill, with
an arch-shaped opening, attracted local attention and lead to its
preservation by the local authorities.
The
Penedo Furado was carved in geological formations consisting of a
sequence of sandstones that vary in grain size from medium- to
coarse-grained, locally very coarse-grained with occasional coarse
gravel and large rounded pebbles. The silty matrix is often unseen
in the latter facies type. Throughout the outcrop there is clear
alternation between finer and coarser facies types and the
occurrence of trough cross bedding is common.
