Geocache Description:

Bullhead Point

At this site you will find an informational marker and see the remains of 3 different ships protruding from the water just feet from the shoreline.

Empire State

Empire State
The Empire State was launched in April of 1862. Built as a "propeller," a term that distinguished her from contemporary paddle wheeled steamers, the passenger freight steamer carried passengers above decks and freight below. The vessel was reportedly popular, transporting many immigrants and prominent people westward. Her dimensions were 212 feet in length, 33 feet in beam, and 12 feet in depth.

Ida Corning

Ida Corning
As sailing vessels became obsolete at the turn of the 20th century, hulls that could be converted to barges were plentiful and cheap. This was already the case with the Ida Corning. She was constructed as a purpose-built schooner-barge in Saginaw, Michigan in 1881. Two masts, a fore and a mizzen , gave this 168 by 31 by 11-foot vessel the configuration of a Grand Haven rig.

Oak Leaf

Oak Leaf
The Oak Leaf was originally constructed in 1866 in Cleveland, Ohio . The two-masted centerboard schooner was built for Captain Henry Kelly, whose fleet routinely traded between Lakes Erie and Michigan. The vessel's original dimensions of 130 feet in length by 32 feet in beam were small to average for the time period. The ship was intended to carry bulk cargo such as grain, corn, lumber, ore, coal, riprap, gravel, and crushed stone, commodities in which sailing vessels could still compete with rail transportation and the ever more efficient steam ship.

This site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Enjoy another beautiful view of the waters around Sturgeon Bay. Another in my maritime/nautical/scuba themed caches around Door County.
