Geocache Description:

A satisfying walk particularly suited to those who enjoy a bit of bird watching and let's face it, who doesn’t.

As with the other caches in this series, it is quite exposed so make sure you are wearing the appropriate clothing. The footpath can be found just to the north of the parking waypoint down a tarmac road which is marked private, footpath only.

Once you have passed the various farm buildings you will come to a pond boarded by willow trees and the best way to approach the cache, is by turning right just past this pond and follow the footpath along the riverbank.

The cache is located near Paglesham Lagoon on the north bank of the River Roach, halfway between Stambridge Mill and Paglesham boatyard and is another unspoilt walk in this part of Essex. A sizeable fresh water area with extensive reed beds that extend the length of the river wall from Stambridge Mill to Paglesham boatyard. Just to the North of the Lagoon and to be seen on the walk is Bartonhall Grove, a large copse which for some years has attracted the only Heronry in this part of Essex. This is an excellent place for a spot of bird watching, some of the species to be seen are:

Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Little Egret, Bewicks Swan, Shelduck, Gadwall Shoveler, Pochard, Scaup, Goldeneye, Red Breasted Merganser, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Merlin, Avocet, Ringed Plover, Golden Plover, Grey Plover, Spotted Redshank, Black-tailed Godwit, Black Headed Gull, Common Gull, Common Tern, Stock Dove, Cuckoo, Kingfisher, Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Meadow Pipit, Yellow Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, Pied Wagtail, Reed Warbler, Whitethroat, Goldcrest, Stonechat, Long Tailed Tit, Yellowhammer, Corn Bunting,Reed Bunting, Bullfinch, Linnet.

If you need some light refreshment or something stronger after all that walking and bird watching, I can recommend the Royal Oak pub just a few hundred yards further on in the village of Great Stambridge, it serves good beer and excellent food.
