João
Annes de Lourido, a quem o Mosteiro doara terras junto ao
Bombarral, talvez tenha sido o primeiro proprietário da Quinta dos
Loridos, por volta de 1430. Nos finais do sec. XV, aparecem em
Lisboa os Aifaitati ou Lafetas, familia de banqueiros italianos,
provenientes da cidade de Cremona, que controlavam uma das mais
poderosas companhias intemacionais, com sucursais em Roma,
Portugal, Espanha, Flanders, Inglaterra e Franca. Associados ao
comércio do açucar da ilha da Madeira, e, logo após o regresso de
Vasco da Gama, em 1499, ao tráfico de especiarias, fixam-se na zona
de Obidos, tendo construido casa de campo na Quinta dos Loridos
doada por El Rei D. Manuel I, no inicio do sec.
XVI. Na actualidade, a imagem quinhentista ainda é marcante na
organizacão espacial das construçôes, nos jardins em socalcos, e
particularmente, no portal “Paladiano” do corpo central
do edificio, de inspiração obviamente colhida na Itália do sec XVI.
Curiosamente a casa dos Aifaitati em Cremona apresenta um portal
idêntico.
Em meados do sec. XVIII, a Quinta dos Loridos é propriedade da
familia Sanches de Baena, da qual o portal de entrada apresenta uma
pedra de armas. Esta famIlia, ao adquirir a Quinta, procedeu a
alteraçöes exteriores de grande impacte visual e clara filiação
barroca, de que e exemplo a entrada e capela. Em 1834, o Capitão
João Pedro Barboza compra a Quinta dos Loridos. 0 seu filho, José
Antonio da Silva Barboza quis deixa-la em testamento a um pároco,
que a recusou, pedindo-lhe que deixasse ao primo, Albino Herculano
da Silveira Sepulveda, que deste modo a herdou.
Os Loridos mantiveram-se na familia Sepülveda ate 1989, quando a
firma J.P. Vinhos, S.A adquiriu. Desde então foi realizada uma
profunda obra de restauro, que inclui a reconstrução dos telhados e
interiores, a instalação de uma adega para a produçao de um
espumante Método Clássico numa antiga adega existente que ainda
conserva um lagar de pedra com prensa de “vara”, a
construção de uma cave de envelhecimento e a plantaçao de
vinha.
Desde o final dos anos 80, quando a Quinta foi adquirida pela JP
Vinhos, inicia-se então à adaptação das vinhas aí existentes, à
produção de vinhos com direito à apelação de espumantes, bem como
de outras variedades de uva inovadoras que lhe permitam vir a
produzir vinhos de mesa com a denominação de origem de região
(Estremadura) de que são exemplos as castas Pinot, Alvarinho e
Cabernet. A Quinta dos Loridos dispöe de uma vinha com 45 hectares,
com um compasso de 2,4 x 1,1 e uma densidade de 3.700 plantas. As
principais castas plantadas são: Castelão, Fernão Pires, Merlot,
Tinta Roriz, Chardonnay, Arinto, Alvarinho e Pinot.
Foi recentemente adquirida por Joe Berardo, que está a criar um
jardim que pretende ser uma homenagem aos budas que foram
bombardeados e será o maior jardim do Oriente da Europa. A idéia de
construir este jardim surgiu quando Joe Berardo soube, indignado,
da destruição das estátuas do Buda pelos talibans no
Afeganistão.
Joe Berardo diz que ainda não sabe como será o funcionamento do
jardim, nomeadamente no que diz respeito ao pagamento ou não de
entradas. Para já, e apesar de uma placa à entrada avisar que se
trata de propriedade privada, nunca ninguém foi impedido de entrar
e fotografar aquele espaço invulgar, até mesmo quando estão a
decorrer as obras.

João Annes de Lourido, to whom the Monastrery donated land next to
Bombarral, was perhaps the first owner of Quinta dos Loridos, in
around 1430. At the end of the 15th century, the Aifaitati or
Lafetas arrive in Lisbon, a family of Italian bankers from the city
of Cremona, who controlled one of the most powerful international
wine companies of the era, with branches in Rome, Portugal, Spain,
Flanders, England and France. Associated with the Madeira sugar
trade and, immediately following the return of Vasco da Gama, in
1499, with the spice trade, the family settled in the area of
Obidos. There, they built a country residence at the Quinta dos
Loridos, donated by King Dom Manuel I at the beginning of the l6th
century. Today, a l6th century feel still dominated the layout of
the buildings, gardens and vine terraces. It is particularly
evident at the “Paladiano” doorway in the central part
of the building, which bears obvious l6th century Italian
inspiration. Curiously, the Aifaitati house in Cremona has an
identical doorway.
In the middle of the 18th century, the Sanches de Baena family,
whose coat of arms appears in stone on the front doorway, owned the
Quinta dos Loridos. When this family purchased the Quinta, they set
about altering the exterior of the building in order to achieve a
great visual impact of intrinsic baroque origin. The chapel
entrance is an obvious example of this. In 1834, Capatain João
Pedro Barboza purchased the Quinta dos Loridos. His son, José
Antonio da Silva Barboza subsequently inherited it. He then wanted
to leave it to a parish priest in his will, but this priest refused
it, asking him instead to leave it to his cousin, Albino Herculano
da Silveira Sepülveda, who thus came to inherit it.
Loridos stayed in the Sepülveda family until 1989, when J.P.
Vinhos, S.A. purchased it. Since then, extensive renovation work
has taken place, including the reconstruction of the roof and
interiors, the installation of a cellar for the production of
sparkling wine using the Classic Method, the construction of the
cellar for ageing and the planting of vineyards. The new cellar for
the production of sparkling wine is, in fact, constructed within an
old cellar that still has a stone grape press and a
“spindle” press.
Since the purchase of the Quinta dos Loridos by J.P. Vinhos, S.A.
in the late ‘80’s, adaptation was made of the existing
vineyards, to wine production with the right of naming Sparkling,
as well as other innovating grape varieties, which allow the wine
production of table wine with regional origin denomination
(Estremadura) of which grape varieties are an example: Pinot,
Alvarinho and Cabernet.
The Quinta dos Loridos disposes of 45 hectares of vineyards, a
compasses of 2,4 x 1,1 and a density of 3.700 plants. The major
grape varieties planted are: Castelão, Fernão Pires, Merlot, Tinta
Roriz, Chardonnay, Arinto, Alvarinho and Pinot.
It was recently acquired by Joe Berardo, who's creating a garden
that pretends to be an tribute to the budas who were bombed, and it
will be the largest "Eastern" garden of Europe. The idea of
building this garden came when Joe Berardo knew about the
destruction of the statues of Buda by the talibans in
Afhganistan.
Joe Berardo said that he doesn't know yet how the garden will work,
namely paying or not for the entrance. For now, and even having a
plaque at the entrance saying that it is a private property, no one
was ever stopped of entering, walking e photographing that unusal
space.
