Wanderung auf den "kleinen" Pantokrator-Berg bei Agios Mattheos über ca. 350 Höhenmeter und 8 km (hin und zurück). 8 km hike (there and back again) to the top of "little" Pantokrator nearby Agios Mattheos with 350 m difference in altitude.

Der kleine Pantokrator liegt an der Westküste Korfus, nördlich des Korission-Sees. An seinen nordöstlichen Hang schmiegt sich Agios Mattheos, von wo aus wir den Berg bestiegen haben. Weil nicht nur das Kloster in der Nähe des Caches einen Blick wert (auch, wenn es geschlossen) ist, sondern sich einem auch von dem Aussichtsplatz kurz vor dem Gipfel phantastisches Blicke bieten und besonders, weil wir trotz gnadenloser Mittagshitze den Aufstieg geschafft haben, liegt nun auf dem Gipfel ein PET-ling. The small Pantokrator is located on the western coast of Corfu, north of lake Korission. Agios Mattheos lies on the nort-eastern hillside of Mount Pantokrator. Here we started our hike to the peak. The Monastery nearby the peak is worth a look (though closed) and one has a great view over parts of the island from a picnic-place nearby. Especially because we made it to the peak under a merciless sun on midday we have left there a PET-ling.
Verpflegung und Ausrüstung
Ihr benötigt viel Wasser, Sonnenschutz, gute Schuhe und für die etwa 8 km ca. 3 h Zeit, bis Ihr wieder am Auto seid. Die Zeit gilt für Flachländer ohne besondere Bergkondition in der Mittagshitze. Zu dieser Zeit findet sich auf dem Weg nur wenig Schatten. Besser ist natürlich ein Aufstieg am frühen Morgen oder späten Nachmittag. Der Weg ist gut, jedoch aufgrund der starken Steigung anstrengend. Es gibt einen Picknickplatz am Kloster und einen zwischen Kloster und Gipfel mit grandioser Aussicht. Den Picknickplatz am kloster können wir nicht empfehlen, denn als wir dorthin gingen, machte sich eine Schlange von dannen....		 Provisions and equipment
You need a lot of water, something against the sun and good shoes for 8 km. It will take 3 hours until you are back to your car if you are an untrained plainsman (like we are) and foolish enough to go in the heat of midday. At that time there are not much shadows protecting you from sunlight. We suggest an early morning or late afternoon hike. The path is good but exhausting because of the inclination. There are two locations for a picnic. We do not recommend the one northwest of the monastery because we saw a snake there. The other one with great view ist between the monastery and the peak.
Wegbeschreibung
Die Wanderung beginnt bei dem Wegpunkt "START" am südlichen Ende der Ortschaft Agios Matheos auf etwa 110m Höhe. Hier steht ein braunes Schild, das auf das Kloster "Moni Pantokrator" hinweist, welches man kurz vor dem Gipfel passiert.		 Directions
Your hike starts in southern end of Aghios Mattheos at waypoint "START" about 110m above sealevel. Here you will find a brown sign to the monastery you will pass later.
Wir konnten direkt gegenüber dem Schild am Kindergarten parken (laßt aber das Fenster nicht auf, sonst habt ihr nachher diverse Steine und Bauklötze im Auto ). Folgt der Straße, bis Ihr an eine Abzweigung kommt. Der rechte Weg geht hinunter in den Ort. Ihr nehmt also den linken. Bald führt eine weitere Straße rechts hinab in den Ort, Ihr haltet Euch wieder links. Anschließend trefft Ihr auf eine kleine Hütte mit einer Schranke (Wegpunkt BARR). Hier geht der Weg weiter. Gegenüber führt ein anderer, älterer Pfad nach oben, der laut Satellitenbild in der zweiten Kehre Eures Weges wieder auf Euren Weg trifft. Kurz vor dem Kloster folgen vier Kehren kurz aufeinander. We parked on the other side of the road in front of a kindergarden (close the windows of the car or you will find some pebbles and building bricks inside ). Follow the road until it parts. The right road leads downhill into the village so you take the left one. Do this again when the road parts the next time. Later you will find a small hut with a barrier (Waypoint BARR). Take this way, not the one opposite to the hut. We had a look at satellite-pictures and it seems this elder path will reach the path you are about to take two hairpin-bends later. After some time there will be four hairpin-bends in rapid succession. After them you will reach the monastery.

Das verlassene Kloster (MONAST) ist nur am 6. August geöffnet, wenn die Kirchweih gefeiert wird. Seine Ursprünge sollen bis ins 4. Jh. zurückreichen. Links der Klostermauer führt ein Trampelpfad zu dem Picknickplatz mit Aussicht. Von dort sind es nur noch ein paar Meter bis zum Gipfel, der laut Karte 464m ü. NN liegt. Hier ist besondere Vorsicht geboten, denn viele der Steine sind nicht befestigt. The vacant monastery (MONAST) will only be opened on August, 6th, for the celebration of church anniversary. In this place the first monastery was built in the 4th century. Lefthand of the cloister wall there is a small path leading to the picnic location and the peak, 464m above sealevel. Be careful, most of the stones are not fixed!

Den Cache findet Ihr innerhalb der Steinmauern bei dem Wegpunkt CACHE. The cache can be found from inside the wall at the waypoint CACHE.
Wir haben den selben Rückweg genommen, die Beschreibung des Wanderweges schlägt jedoch auch einen teilweise anderen vor: im NW des Klosters liegt ein Picknickplatz (der mit der Schlange). Noch etwas weiter im NW beginnt ein Pfad durch den Wald, der später wieder auf den schon bekannten Weg trifft. Man kann diesen Weg auf dem Satellitenbild erahnen, wir sind diesen jedoch nicht gegangen und können deswegen nicht bestätigen, daß man wirklich dort ankommt, wie beschrieben. We went the same way back but the description of the hiking trail suggests a partly other way: northwest of the cloister - passing the spot with the snake - there begins a small path downwards through the wood. It should reach the way you know in the first hairpin-bend after the barrier. One can slightly see this path on the satellite picture but we haven't tested this way.
Koordinaten, Satelliten und Karten
Obwohl wir auf dem Berg eine hohe Genauigkeit angezeigt bekommen haben, zeigen die Koordinaten bei Googlemaps nicht auf den Ort, an dem wir uns befunden haben, als wir den Punkt speicherten. 'Annelie&Alex' haben die Final-Koordinaten so vermessen: N39° 29,245 E19° 52,298. Auch dieser Punkt wird bei Googlemaps falsch angezeigt. Sollte Euch also etwas merkwürdig vorkommen, geht zum Gipfel und benutzt den Spoiler.		 Coordinates, satellites and maps
Although our GPS showed very exact coordinates up there googlemaps shows quite different places. 'Annelie&Alex' took a new position at: N39° 29,245 E19° 52,298. Googlemaps shows this point wrong, too. So when you think something is wrong follow the description to the top of the hill and use the spoiler-picture.

Südlich des Pantokrators liegt eine byzantinische Festung. Auch hier haben wir einen Cache (GC1D4YQ) versteckt.
