Caught in the Santa Monica City Web Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

BLAA: Indeed the reference webpage for this puzzle has been changed - which renders the puzzle unsolvable. I tried many possibilities to rehabilitate the puzzle...but the new format will not allow this. I retrieved the original container we placed there over 9 years ago.

Thank you for the notification about the change - every time I checked in the puzzle was still solvable. I appreciate that this was brought to my attention by a fellow cacher.

Geocache Description:

The Cache is not at this location. You will have to solve the puzzle to locate the correct coordinates for this tough hide.

Incorporated on November 30, 1886, the city of Santa Monica is only 8.3 square miles but it boasts dozens of parks, bike routes and beaches. In 1909 Santa Monica hosted a Grand Prize Car Race along the city streets. The start-finish line was located near Montana Avenue on Ocean Avenue. The race course continued along Ocean Avenue turning sharply at Nevada Avenue (now known as Wilshire Boulevard). News reports referred to this as “Dead Man’s Curve”. The course continued up through the City of Los Angeles, turning back towards the west on San Vicente. The City hosted eight car races over the next decade. The City’s storied history includes hosting the Academy Awards presentations also for eight years but in the 1960’s, starting with the 33rd Academy Awards held on April 17, 1961 in the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. The City also led the way in providing valuable information to residents, visitors and businesses by developing and maintaining a very useful and fact-filled website.

Remember there is no cache at these published coordinates; you will have to solve the puzzle to find the actual cache location. We placed the coordinates for this cache listing near some shops on Montana Avenue. What does this have to do with the puzzle? Well nothing, but it's a pretty street. The actual cache location is often crawling with muggles, but if you time your grab you should not have any troubles. Please be discreet and return the cache to the spot where you found it. Please bring your own pen. There will be no room for trades; which is just as well for a puzzle cache. Now for the puzzle...

So how much do you know about Santa Monica? If you are interested in learning more about the City of Santa Monica, visit its website by clicking here: (visit link) What kind of information can you find? Well certainly you will need to find your way around the City. The website boasts a number of maps, all in pdf format, in its Map Catalog - North of two dozen, in fact. But you will want to run your finger down to count the number for yourself! Do you like to ride your bike? You can check out the City’s Bike Map and Safety Information. Don’t have a bike? Well be sure to check out the Bus Route Map for the City’s impressive network of busses. What’s missing from the City’s map information? Zero, I say! In fact there is even an Airport (SMO) map for those who can arrive in style on their own plane. But what POINT is the website if you don’t need maps? And how familiar are with our Santa Monica Municpal Code ... well it's ALL available! And rest assured that if you swim in Santa Monica you shouldn't have to worry about someone fishing nearby thanks to a particular provision called Swimming Areas—Fishing in section 10.08 which makes it "unlawful to fish or angle in the designated Swimming Areas, unless all tackle and other fishing paraphernalia are at all times at least 100 feet from any person in the waters thereof." Whew! That's reassuring!

Changing direction, and back to the maps, if you want to see this West City's Districting (Zoning) , there is even a map for that! But back to basics; you'll find a City Map - General And since this is a coastal city there is Tsunami Hazard LA County map showing the "maximum modeled tsunami runup" areas. And of course, what's the POINT to regulations if the City cannot stay beautiful? The Municpal Code has provisions to keep the paved surfaces in the City safe from messy mixed plaster. There is a provision in the Municipal Code called Plaster - Mixing on the Street in section 7.04 which make it unlawful to mix, make, place or pile any mortar, concrete, plaster, or lime, or any similar substance or mixture upon any surface of any paved street ... so keep that in mind when you come to Santa Monica!
