Le gole della Viamala si trovano 4 km a sud di Thusis e sono le più spettacolari e profonde del cantone dei Grigioni.
Le sue pareti rocciose, strettissime e profonde fino a 300 metri, sono percorse sin dall’epoca romana, in cui la Viamala costituiva un importante passaggio sulla rotta Nord-Sud. Solo nel 1400 fu aperta la via dello Spluga per i commerci con l’Italia. Alcuni tratti dell’antica via romana sono ancora visibili, scendendo verso il fiume tramite una ripida scalinata di circa 300 gradini.
Anche se non è possibile indicare con certezza la data di formazione delle Gole della Viamala, per la quasi totale assenza di fossili, le stesse risalirebbero al periodo interglaciale, lavorate dall’azione del Reno, che scorre sul fondo delle gole, per milioni di anni. La pressione dei ghiacci ha contribuito a formare delle rocce, molto fragili, facilmente riconoscibili per la loro stratificazione, ma che presentano una strana colorazione, dovuta alla presenza di un particolare tipo di quarzo, tipico della zona.

Viamala gorge are 4 km south from Thusis and it’s the most spectacular and deep gorge of Grigioni Region.
The gorge, really narrow and deep until 300 meters, are used since the Roman Age, when Viamala was an important way on the commercial route North-South in Europe. Only on XV century was opened the way of the Spluga for the commerce with Italy. Some features of the ancient road are still visible coming down towards the river through a stair of approximately 300 steps.
Is impossible to indicate with certainty the date of formation of the Viamala gorge due to the lak of fossils; the gorge probabily born during middle glacial period, by the action of the Reno (today on the bottom) for millions of years. The pressure of the ice has contributed to create fragile rocks, easy recognizable for their stratification, with strange coloration, due to the presence of a particular kind of quartz, typical in the zone.

Die Viamala-Schlucht liegt 4 km südlich von Thusis und es ist die spektakulärste und tiefeste Schlucht der Region Graubünden.
Die Schlucht, wirklich eng und tief, war seit der Römerzeit, ein wichtiger Weg für die Nord-Süd Handelsroute in Europa. Hinunter in Richtung des Flusses führt eine Treppe von etwa 300 Stufen.
Es ist unmöglich, den Zeitpunkt der Entstehung der Viamala-Schlucht mit Gewissheit zu bestimmen. Fossilien, die Schlucht wurde etwa während der Glazial-Periode geboren, durch das Fliessen des Rheins während Millionen von Jahren. Der Druck des Eises hat dazu beigetragen, zerbrechlich Felsen zu schaffen, leicht erkennbar für ihre Schichtung, mit seltsamen Färbung, aufgrund des Vorhandenseins einer bestimmten Art von Quarz, typisch in dieser Zone der Schweiz.
