Wareham has a history that goes back nearly 2000 years. It flourished in Saxon times and was a strategic stronghold for King Alfred the Great. Due to its status and location, many Viking raids were staged in the area. This led King Alfred to command great earthen walls to be built around the town which can still be seen today.
The Saxon church of St. Martin-on-the-walls is about 1000 years old, although it is reputed to have been founded earlier than this by St Aldhelm in the 7th century. It is the most complete example of a Saxon church in Dorset. It is well worth taking a look inside the church where you will find 12th century frescoes depicting St Martin on horseback. He can be seen dividing his cloak and giving one half to a beggar. Also there is an effigy of T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) which was given to the church by Lawrence's brother in 1939.
