Geocache Description:

The Mountaineer Tree in Point Defiance Park is just a reminder of the huge old trees that used to cover the low lands of the Puget Sound Basin. The posted coordinates will take you to the tree and a nearby sign with the information that you need to find the final.

7-10-2012 The sign has been replaced with a slightly different one so the formula has also been slightly changed.

The Mountaineer Tree, a large Douglas Fir, has been around since before Shakespeare was born, standing as a sentinel at the gate to the Narrows. The name is simply a dedication, not a sign of ownership, to a local outdoor club who's members have done much to help preserve both this park and wild areas throughout the country. Take a few minutes to collect the information from the sign that will lead you to the final cache.

A = the first digit of the number of years that the tree could remain on this spot.
BC = the last two digits of the year that the tree was originally dedicated as the Mountaineer Tree.
DEF = the three digits of how tall the tree measures + 18.

Now plug in the numbers:
47 EF.C(A+D)(C-D) North
122 (D+E)D.BBA West
Note: only adding and subtracting are required, no multiplication or division

Tree cover in the area of the final can interfere with a strong GPS signal. You will find the final under the base of one not as lucky as the Mountaineer Tree.
