The University of Jan Evangelista Purkyne carries the name of Libochovice native J. E. Purkyne who is considered to be one of the most important naturalist and physician.
There exists a long tradition of geographical studies at the university. In 2005 the Department of Geography became one of the parts of Faculty of Science. The department offers two basic types of study programmes. The first one is focused on Teaching of Geography (Bachelor and Master Degree) and educates the future teachers of primary and secondary schools. The second type of study programmes aims at education of professionals skilled in geographical issues. The department focuses on 3D geovisualization and modelling, especially on 3D modelling of historical buildings complexes and its development up to present. As far as equipment and research background are concerned, there is also laboratory of environmental geography, DTP studio (digital cameras, plotter, scanners, printers), laboratory of navigation (GPS receivers), meteorological station, geological collection, collections of maps and reading room at the department. Opportunities of using exchange programmes at foreign universities are natural. The department participates in organising Geographical Olympiad and arranges “The Day of Geography”, “The Week of Geography” and “GIS day” including workshops, lectures and projection of films related to geographical issues. The excursions to closer or distant regions of the Czech Republic or European countries have been considered very popular too.
