Geocache Description:

The Nkwe Ridge Observatory (NRO) was founded in 1995 in collaboration with various interest groups and disciplines, for the purpose of establishing a relatively dark-sky site for research and education of astronomy with the emphasis on ethno- and archaeo-astronomy of Southern Africa.

By studying the artifacts and lore of early human communities, archaeoastronomers hope to discover how these societies learned about the heavens and how and why they used their insights in agriculture, philosophy, and religion. Stonehenge is an example of such a mysterious site.

The following is an illustration of the type of research being conducted by dr. Richard Wade, a pioneer in archaeo-astronomy and the founder of NRO:

"Most striking, however, is Wade's discovery that the large conical tower in Great Zimbabwe, which dates from the 14th century, is, when seen from the platform, in alignment with the supernova remnant RX J0852.0-4622 in the constellation Vela. The point is that RX J0852.0-4622 is now believed to have gone supernova some time between AD 1300 and 1340, and would have been clearly visible in the Southern Hemisphere.

There is thus a most suggestive correlation between the construction of the large tower and what would have been a spectacular event in the heavens."
