There are lots of car parks round the town, unfortunately all
pay and display, about £1.00 for 1hr.
All the caches are small, 35mm film pots or nanos. As with all town
caches, they are in high muggle areas so you will have to be
careful!
The cache is located at the rear of the Friends
Meeting House (Quakers) Access is through the arch, to the right of the shop,
N54 31.444 W001 33.442 and cannot
be accessed from any other direction.
The Quakers have had a huge impact on Darlington. Most of the
main business men were Quakers. The Pease’s with their links to the
railways and the coal mines and the Backhouse’s, an MP for the town
and a bank owner. The Barclays branch on High Row once belonged to
the Backhouse family. A lot of the large houses in Darlington were
built for Quaker families. Darlington was known as a Quaker town,
and the football team still has the nickname ‘The Quakers’
The first ‘meeting house’ was built in 1678. After lots of
alterations they ended up with the present building in Skinner
Gate.
You may be surprised at the number of graves round here. Have a
look at some of the names near the cache, Pease and Backhouse.
Edward Pease used to come here to visit his wife Rachel's
grave.
Bear in mind this is a grave yard, a tranquil spot, which welcomes
visitors. Please be sensitive to the area. Remember to leave the
canister with the lid at the top to stop it getting wet.
