Geocache Description:

This is a series of caches in the area of Darlington town centre, highlighting some of the history of the town.

There are lots of car parks round the town, unfortunately all pay and display.
All the caches are small, 35mm film pots or Nanos. As with all town caches, they are in high muggle areas so you will have to be careful!

There are some excellent pdf documents at the bottom of the page giving loads of history and information and walks.

This stone is Granite and was brought over from Shap, on the other side of the Pennines, by a glacier. It now languishes behind a fence in front of the old technical college. When the college was first built the stone sat in front of it on the pavement jutting out into the street a little. Eventually it was deemed a hazard to traffic (this was the A1) and in 1923 was moved to its present position.
The technical college was built in 1897 and has two statues on top representing Art and Science.
Darlington is perhaps most famous for its railway which opened in 1825.
Opposite the college above the Kebab shop are two plaques which note the start of the Darlington/Stockton railway. Unfortunately historians tell us that the plaques have the wrong information, wrong dates and are in the wrong place!! The original house of Edward Pease was closer to the roundabout and has been converted to shops. The back had a large garden running down to the river Skerne. It is an industrial area now but street names remind us of what has gone, Garden Street opposite and Valley Street further down.
The big house next door to the college, North Lodge, situated just back from the road, was built in1838 for another member of the Pease family.
