Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of seven Church Micros in Lewes, leading to a Bonus. In order to complete the Bonus cache you will need to collect a clue at each of the locations. These are not in the cache itself but in the grounds of these fine places of worship.

The Parish Church of St Anne with St Mary

St Anne's lies at the top of Lewes's High Street in Western Road next to County Hall (the home of the Perfunctory Butcher’s). It was originally known as St Peters and St Mary Westout, but by the sixteenth century was generally associated with St Anne, the patron saint of wells, probably from its proximity to a healing well. It is the oldest church remaining in Lewes, and was part of the endowment given by Earl William II de Warenne about 1095 to the Cluniac Priory of St Pancras. The oldest parts, built in the early twelfth century, are the tower (with corbels in the form of grotesque gargoyles), the nave and the south chapel, though the exterior of the nave was much altered in Victorian times. The chancel was rebuilt in the 13th century. The 12th century font has some fine old carvings. The church roof dates from the 16th century. Of the graves around the church of particular interest are 12 iron leaping boards in the north-west corner; these are associated with the Medhursts, a family involved in ironworks near to the church.

The actual cache can be found on the parimeter wall to County Halls Priority car park, please replace the stickoflage when replacing.

The clue for this Church Micro is found on the gravestone to the right of the cache - what age was Henry when he died? This will give you A.

If any body would like to expand to this series please do, we would just ask that you could let sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication

Please bring your own writing implement !
