Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of seven Church Micros in Lewes, leading to a Bonus. In order to complete the Bonus cache you will need to collect a clue at each of the locations. These are not in the cache itself but in the grounds of these fine places of worship.

All Saints Community, Arts and Youth centre

The church of All Saints is named in a document of 1148. The parishes of Lewes (St Peter the Less, Holy Trinity and Holy Sepulchre) were merged at the end of the 14th century resulting in the church being rebuilt. By Act of Parliament of 1805 the parish was authorised to pull down the old building, although financial prudence decided (happily) to retain the tower. As a result only a simple brick-built nave small proto-chancel replaced, enhancements were made in the 19th Century. In September 1980 the redundant church of All Saints was given to Lewes Town Council to be used as a Community, Arts and Youth centre. Lewes District Council has been directly-managing the All Saints Centre since 2001.

Friends Meeting House (Quakers)

A Quaker Meeting for Worship is based on silence and the equality of all present. The Quaker movement reached Lewes in 1655 when Thomas Robinson 'Declared the Truth' at The Croft - John Russell's house in Southover High Street. In 1674 a deed was signed for a 'burying ground' in Lewes and some 100 years later work began on the present meeting house, sited on an unused part of the burial ground.

The actual cache can be found in the grounds of the All Saints church. Whilst here have a wonder around some of the interesting sculptures and check out the creepy crypt at the far end of the grounds.

The clue for this Church Micro is the date above the porch of the Friends meeting House next door to All Saints. This will give you Q.

If any body would like to expand to this series please do, we would just ask that you could let sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication

Please bring your own writing implement !
